Art in Education Week: Where Creativity Meets Every Learning Area

A vibrant celebration of creativity swept through our school from 13th to 19th September as we marked the Week of Art in Education. Under the theme of art breathing life into every Learning Area, learners, teachers and staff set out to discover something we have long believed: art is not a separate subject tucked away at the end of the timetable, but a thread that runs through everything we learn.

Art Beyond the Art Room

For one week, classrooms across the school became studios. Rather than treating art as a standalone lesson, teachers wove creative activities into their everyday teaching, inviting learners to think, explore and express their understanding through colour, shape, texture and design.

The result was a fresh way of seeing familiar topics. Concepts that can feel abstract on the pages of a textbook took on new meaning once learners could hold them, build them and display them with pride.

Mathematics: The Geometry of Time

In Mathematics, learners explored the geometric precision behind timekeeping. Clock faces became lessons in circles, angles, fractions and equal division, as learners discovered how a single circle can be divided into hours and minutes with perfect symmetry. Designing and decorating their own clocks helped them see that mathematics is not only about numbers, but also about pattern, balance and beauty.

Social Studies: Mapping Our World

In Social Studies, the spotlight fell on the cartographic beauty of mapmaking. Learners discovered that a map is both a scientific tool and a work of art: it requires careful measurement, a clear key and accurate scale, but also thoughtful use of colour, symbols and layout so that others can read it with ease. Through drawing and designing maps, learners strengthened their understanding of location, direction and the environment around them, while building an appreciation for the people and places that make up our world.

Creativity Across Every Learning Area

The same spirit carried through the rest of the week. Across the Learning Areas, learners found that creativity sharpens observation, encourages patience and gives them a new language for sharing what they know. Whether through lettering, craft, design or illustration, every activity reminded us that the skills developed in art, such as careful attention to detail, problem solving and imagination, are the same skills that help learners thrive in every subject.

The Grand Finale: Friday’s Mini Showcase

The week reached its crescendo on Friday with an inspiring mini showcase. The exhibition space was transformed into a rich tapestry of colour, texture and ingenuity, as learners proudly displayed the work they had created. Highlights included:

  • Calligraphy: delicate, carefully formed lettering that showed the patience and precision behind beautiful handwriting.
  • Beadwork: colourful designs celebrating a rich cultural craft and the pattern-making skills it demands.
  • Paper craft: imaginative creations that turned simple sheets of paper into intricate forms.
  • Pottery: rustic pieces shaped by hand, connecting learners to one of humanity’s oldest art forms.
  • DIY home décor: practical and creative items that showed how art can brighten everyday spaces.
  • Drawing and painting: works exploring the essential media every young artist builds upon.

Visitors moved from table to table, admiring the variety and quality of the work and listening as learners explained how their pieces were made and what they had learnt along the way.

Why Art Matters in Learning

The Week of Art in Education was a powerful testament to how art does not merely sit alongside other subjects, but serves as the very lens through which curiosity, connection and learning come alive. Art helps learners build confidence, express ideas they may struggle to put into words, work collaboratively and appreciate their cultural heritage. It nurtures the creative thinkers and problem solvers our world needs.

Thank You

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our learners for their enthusiasm and hard work, to our teachers for their creativity in bringing art into every lesson, and to our parents and guardians for their continued support. As the week comes to a close, the colour and creativity it sparked will continue to inspire learning in our classrooms throughout the year.
