Day of the African Child: Every Child Deserves to Belong

Every year on 16th June, Africa pauses to celebrate the Day of the African Child. This important day commemorates the courage of thousands of South African children who, in 1976, stood up for their right to quality education. Their sacrifice reminds us that children are not merely the leaders of tomorrow; they are valuable members of our communities today, deserving of dignity, protection, love, and opportunity.

As we celebrate this year’s Day of the African Child, we are invited to reflect on a simple yet profound question:

What makes us love a child?

The answer may seem obvious, but in a world where many children face loneliness, neglect, poverty, exclusion, and uncertainty, it is a question worth considering deeply.

Imagine a child sitting alone in a classroom. Another plays by themselves during breaktime. Another eats lunch without a friend beside them. Their greatest need may not be a new toy, a better grade, or even a special reward. Their deepest desire is to know that they matter—to know that they are seen, valued, and loved.

Every child longs to belong.

At Urafiki Carovana School, we believe that each child is a unique gift entrusted to our care. Every learner carries within them immense potential, dreams waiting to be discovered, and talents waiting to flourish. Education, therefore, is not simply the transfer of knowledge. It is the accompaniment of a child on a journey of discovery, helping them understand who they are, what they are capable of becoming, and how they can contribute to the world around them.

Our school motto, “Only Wonder Knows,” reminds us that true learning begins with wonder. When children are encouraged to ask questions, explore, discover, and engage with reality, they begin to recognize the beauty of the world and the purpose of their own lives. Wonder opens the heart to learning, to friendship, and ultimately to gratitude.

Yet wonder can only grow where a child feels safe and loved.

Love is expressed in many ways. It is found in a teacher who takes time to encourage a struggling learner. It is found in a friend who invites another child into a game. It is found in a parent who listens attentively after a long day. It is found in a community that chooses inclusion over indifference.

Small acts of kindness can transform a child’s experience and shape their future.

As a Catholic school, our mission is rooted in the conviction that every person is loved by God and created with an inherent dignity that can never be taken away. This understanding challenges us to see every child not as a statistic, a grade, or a future professional, but as a person whose life has immeasurable value.

The future of Africa depends on how we care for its children today.

When children are educated, nurtured, protected, and encouraged, they grow into adults who can lead with integrity, serve with compassion, and contribute positively to society. When they experience belonging, they learn how to welcome others. When they receive kindness, they learn how to be kind. When they are loved, they learn how to love.

This Day of the African Child, let us renew our commitment to creating environments where every child can thrive. Let us be adults who notice the child sitting alone. Let us be communities that make room for everyone. Let us be educators who inspire curiosity and hope. Let us be parents and guardians who remind children every day that they are loved.

Because every child deserves to belong.

Because every child deserves to be seen.

Because every child deserves to be loved.

And because the Africa we dream of begins with the children we nurture today.

Happy Day of the African Child from Urafiki Carovana School.

Building the Kingdom of God through Education.
